Casual Slurs

Original Air Date: Wednesday, October 17, 2012

When the University of Alberta launched nohomophobes.com this month, the relentless upward tick of the count on each of the site’s four chosen slurs drew attention to the prevalence of casual homophobia in everyday language. In fact, slurs of all varieties – racist, ageist, sexist – pepper our language, casually and deliberately.

But what is “casual” intolerance? If no offense is meant, are we making a mountain out of a molehill in the name of being politically correct? Or do we need to work harder to weed casual slurs out of everyday language?

Joining us
Kris Wells from the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services at the University of Alberta, and Charlene Hay, the Executive Director of the Centre for Race and Culture.
