Post-Secondary Depression

Original Air Date: Tuesday, October 16, 2012

An increasing number of Alberta post-secondary students are depressed, anxious and even suicidal.

The pressure of school stress paired with an uncertain economy and job prospects are contributing to the climbing rates of suicide; but an increased awareness of mental health and a decrease in stigma means more students are seeking help, too.

Why are our youth battling mental illness? Is more pressure put on students than in previous generations? And how are Alberta schools coping?

Joining us for this discussion is Robin Everall, Provost’s Fellow at the University of Alberta; Jennifer Jones Director of the Crisis Support Centre at The Support Network; and Janet Miller, registered psychologist at Mount Royal University.
