Push for a “Progressive” Candidate

Downtown Calgary doesn’t have an MP in Ottawa right now since Lee Richardson resigned last spring to become Premier Alison Redford’s principal secretary.

Former journalist and political commentator Joan Crockatt won the Conservative nomination; but a group has emerged online to unite left-leaning voters around a single contender in an effort to keep the Conservatives out. The group is called “1CalgaryCentre”.

Can this initiative stop vote splitting? How effective are political movements that mobilize online? When will the group choose their candidate?

Joining us for this debate, Brian Singh is representing “1CalgaryCentre” and President and Managing Director of ZINC Research; Dave Cournoyer, Political Blogger known online as “Daveberta”; and Jay Smith, Political Scientist at Athabasca University.
