Child Poverty in Alberta

Original Air Date: Thursday, September 13, 2012

73,000 Alberta children - roughly one in 10 - live in poverty.  It’s a staggering statistic and during the spring election, Premier Redford made a promise to eliminate child poverty within five years.

Some experts say more affordable housing and social programs are key.  Others stress the need for a child tax benefit similar to those used by most other provinces.

What will it take to break Alberta’s cycle of child poverty? How realistic is the Premier's goal of a brighter future in five years?

Joining us for this discussion is Joan Baker, General Manager of the Edmonton YMCA Community Programs and Housing Services; John Kolkman, Research Coordinator for the Edmonton Social Planning Council; and Joe Ceci, Coordinator with Action to End Poverty in Alberta and a former Calgary Alderman.
