Groundwater and the Oil Sands

Original Air Date: Wednesday, August 29, 2012

The bold admission that not enough is known about the effects of oilsands drilling on the groundwater beneath, comes from 50 industry, government, aboriginal, environmental and educational representatives known as the Cumulative Environmental Management Association (CEMA).

Their report suggests the impact of oil sands operations on water tables is not fully understood and - funded mostly by industry - they now plan to find out within 15 years.

How much of its knowledge is industry sharing? Why will understanding take so long? Should oil sands projects be curbed until Albertans know more?

We speak with Glen Semenchuk, Executive Director of the Cumulative Environmental Management Association.
