Alberta Bear Baiting

Original Air Date: Thursday, August 23, 2012

The fall bear-hunting season begins in Alberta in late August. But ours is one, of only five provinces, that allows a controversial hunting practice called bear baiting.

Guides lure bears with food to killing sites weeks before hunting season starts.  Bears return daily to the food piles, but once the season begins, hunters will be waiting in blinds or trees to kill them with guns and bows at point blank range.

Should Alberta continue to allow bear baiting when numerous provinces have made it illegal?  Does it take the hunt out of the sport? How does bear baiting compare to more traditional methods?

We speak with Dave Ealey, Spokesperson for Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.
