"Refining” a compromise?

Original Air Date: Friday, August 24, 2012

A hotly contested bitumen pipeline across B.C. has a new twist, a proposed refinery in Kitimat. Canada had 40 refineries in the 1970's, there are just 18 now, and three are in Alberta.

Economists say our oil industry doesn't need more refining; China is building its own, but others argue Kitimat could become B.C.'s Fort McMurray.

Alberta oil sands companies are desperate to ship. How will the proposed refinery impact debate over a pipeline to the west coast?

Joining us for this discussion is Jason Brisbois, Director of the Western Centre for Economic Research at the Alberta School of Business; Bob Blakely, Canadian Operating Officer of Canada's Building Trades Unions; and Michael Ervin, President of MJ Ervin and Associates, a division of the Kent Group Petroleum Consulting Firm.
