Alberta West Nile Virus

Alberta health officials are confirming a case of human West Nile Virus, but the disease can be just as deadly for domestic mammals such as horses, cattle and donkeys.

There is one confirmed case of West Nile in a horse near Barrhead this summer and now Alberta Agriculture is warning livestock producers to protect their animals.

Can the West Nile Virus spread from animals to people? How deadly is it? And how great is its threat in Alberta?

We talk to Dr. Hernan Ortegon, acting Chief Provincial Veterinarian and Section Head of Animal Health for Alberta Agriculture.
