Youth Engagement: A Bright Future?

Original Air Date: Monday, August 27, 2012

The troubles of the world are hitting a whole lot closer to home - thanks to social media - and some fear a constant barrage of sadness and struggle is creating a generation of jaded and insensitive young Albertans.

More than half of Albertans aged 15 to 24 are volunteering their time, but critics say teens are becoming increasingly complacent.  Many say the challenge lies in inspiring young Albertans in new and unconventional ways.

Are the young people of today connected or complacent?  Are they becoming productive members of society? Is our future in good hands?

Joining us for this discussion is Karen Lynch, Executive Director of Volunteer Alberta; Kathleen Smith, Edmonton Philanthropist and Publisher of Kikkiplanet.com; and Marty Forbes, President of Radiowise Inc. and longtime community activist, well-known in Edmonton for his work with Santas Anonymous and the Jerry Forbes Centre for Community Spirit.
