Rising Food Prices

Original Air Date: Thursday, August 16, 2012

Drought in parts of North America has hiked the cost of corn – a key component in livestock feed - about 30 per cent in the last few months.

Producers say high commodity costs won’t impact Alberta beef in the near future. Others say the price of protein is already on the rise.

How does cost impact what consumers put in their shopping carts? How will producers respond? Are higher food prices a long-term reality?

Joining us to debate sticker shock on your next grocery shop, Joe Rosario, Adjunct Professor with the Western Centre for Economic Research at the Alberta School of Business and Dr. David Chalack, Chairman of the Board of the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency, Immediate Past President and Chairman of the Calgary Stampede board of directors, Veterinarian, and Owner/Partner with Rocky Mountain Holsteins.
