First Nations Property

Original Air Date: Wednesday, August 08, 2012

The Harper government is said to be preparing legislation that would allow First Nations band members to own property on reserves. It's a move federal politicians hope will improve the standard of living in First Nations communities.

However, many aboriginal leaders oppose it, including newly re-elected National Chief Shawn Atleo.

Why is the issue of property ownership meeting with First Nations opposition - and how might the proposed legislation reshape relations with the federal government?

We speak with James Dempsey, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta.
