Demise of the Canadian Wheat Board

Original Air Date: Wednesday, August 01, 2012

Today marks a historic change for the Canadian Wheat Board. After three quarters of a century as a monopoly, membership is now voluntary and farmers are free to market their grain to the highest bidder.

Emotions over the fate of the wheat board remain high. Producers were not allowed to vote on the federal government's decision to end the monopoly and some are moving forward with a multi-billion dollar class-action lawsuit.

What will the demise of the wheat board monopoly mean for Alberta farmers? What will fill the void?

We speak with Humphrey Banack, Vice President of Wildrose Agricultural Producers, an organization advocating for Alberta farmers and ranchers.
