Toxic Algae Surfacing in Alberta Lakes

Original Air Date: Monday, July 30, 2012

Toxic algae warnings are putting a damper on summertime fun at a number of Alberta lakes, including Lac Ste. Anne, Pigeon Lake and Lake Isle. Anyone who wades in, risks contact with blue-green algae, and that could lead to a host of uncomfortable health issues.

Of equal concern is the impact on fish stocks.  Hundreds recently washed up dead along the south shores of Pigeon Lake, one of the three lakes where warnings are in effect.

How far reaching is the problem of blue-green algae this summer? What does it say about the health of Alberta’s lakes and rivers?

With us to shed some light on the issue, Glenn Isaac, Executive Director of the North Saskatchewan Riverkeeper Program.
