A Second Chickenpox Vaccine

Original Air Date: Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Starting August 1, 2012 - a second dose of the chicken pox vaccine will be available free to all children ages four to six. The province expects more than 4,000 pre-schoolers will be eligible.

The vaccine is said to be 90 per cent effective in preventing the disease and an initial dose is provided to children at 12 months of age. The second dose will now be given in conjunction with the regularly scheduled measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.

Why the need to expand Alberta’s chicken pox immunization program? Who are health officials looking to protect the most?

We speak with Dr. James Talbot, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health.
