Shawn Atleo Re-Elected as Chief of Assembly of First Nations
Original Air Date:
Thursday, July 19, 2012
Aboriginal chiefs from across Canada are returning Shawn Atleo to the helm of the Assembly of First Nations. The man getting a second term, is now promising change.
Atleo was challenged by seven other candidates, including four women. They pushed domestic violence, poor education and health, and the federal inquiry on missing women to the fore - and Atleo heard he was too friendly with the Harper government.
Has Chief Atleo heard his members? Will aboriginal leadership grow more powerful? What do Alberta First Nations want Atleo to do?
We speak with James Dempsey, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta.
