Chiefs from across the country are gathered in Toronto, preparing to elect the next leader of the assembly of first nations. It’s a three-year term, as National Chief, representing Canada’s 700,000 First Nations Peoples.
Current National Chief Sean Atleo, and Alberta Chief George Stanley are among eight candidates in the running. Four of whom are women - marking a noticeable change in gender on the ballot.
What role will gender play in the election of the next national chief? What could the outcome say about the future direction of aboriginal governance across Canada?
We speak with Lewis Cardinal, local Aboriginal Leader and owner of Cardinal Strategic Communications.
