Detox Programs for Alberta Teens
Original Air Date:
Tuesday, July 17, 2012
Parents in Alberta can now obtain a court order to keep their teenagers in detox for up to fifteen days, up from the previous five.
Some parents applaud the changes to Alberta’s Protection of Children Abusing Drugs Act, others say the five to ten additional days of mandatory treatment is negligible without longer term follow up.
Should parents have the right to force their children into detox? Is it the right way to treat addicted teens?
Joining us for this discussion is Mark Cherrington, Youth Justice Advocate; Maralyn Benay, Founding Member of Parents Empowering Parents; and Madelyn McDonald, Street Services Program Manager at Wood's Homes, a children's mental health centre.
