Rolling Blackouts

Original Air Date: Tuesday, July 10, 2012

With little to no warning, thousands of Albertans were temporarily left without electricity, the result of rolling blackouts ordered by the Alberta Electric System Operator.

With temperatures soaring, a confluence of events reportedly contributed to the situation. Most notably, the unexpected shutdowns of several power generating stations.

Why did the blackouts hit without warning?  Why were so many power plants offline - and should Albertans expect more of the same with the heat wave continuing?

We speak with Doug Simpson, Director of Market Operations for Alberta Electric System Operator.
