Big City Charter
Original Air Date:
Friday, July 13, 2012
It’s an Alberta first: a big city charter designed to solve some of the special challenges facing Calgary and Edmonton. They are problems both cities have long complained about, which they now feel are being responded to by the provincial government.
But critics say solving one problem is creating another - the deal could give cities too much power over taxes and not enough accountability to businesses and citizens.
What could the new big city charter mean for Albertans? Who should have a say in writing it?
Joining us for this discussion is Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel; Allan Bolstad, former Edmonton City Councillor, and Executive Director of the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues; and Richard Truscott, Alberta Director for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.
