Prairie Heat Wave

Original Air Date: Monday, July 09, 2012

Near record temperatures are taking hold across much of central and southern Alberta, sending thermometers into the low 30's - much warmer than normal.

While many Albertans are accustomed to sizzling summer weather, what's different is the high level of humidity. That makes it feel like 40-degrees Celsius, which is warm enough to warrant power blackouts in Calgary and Edmonton.

Why is it so hot and muggy in Alberta? How do we cope with these non-traditional weather conditions?

We speak with David Phillips, Senior Climatologist with Environment Canada.
