HPV Vaccine Promoting Promiscuity?

Original Air Date: Tuesday, June 26, 2012

A group of Calgary parents and doctors is pushing Catholic School Trustees to reverse their policy banning the HPV immunization - a vaccine offered free to girls in grades five and nine throughout the province.

The vaccine helps prevent the sexually transmitted infection that causes cervical and other cancers. While the Catholic School System in Edmonton allows the immunization, Calgary’s Board bans it, fearing the promotion of promiscuity.

What role do morals play in health education? How far are parents and doctors pushing for the vaccine willing to take their fight?

We speak with Juliet Guichon, Parent and Bio-Ethicist an Assistant Professor with the University of Calgary’s Community Health Sciences Department.

Here is the full text of the Calgary Catholic School District's Statement on HPV vaccination.
