Tariffs on Tunes

Original Air Date: Friday, June 22, 2012

The Copyright Board of Canada has certified a new charge for recorded music at public events to compensate artists and record companies.

Hotels, banquet halls, or any venue is now responsible for the new cost and Albertans, from newlyweds to party hosts, will start seeing it on bills. The first payments are due on October 1st.

Is the new tariff fair for performers and record companies? Is it fair for the public?

Joining us for this discussion is Wendy Armstrong, Board Member of the Consumers' Association of Alberta; Cameron Hutchison, Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta, he specializes in Intellectual Property Law; and Martin Gangnier, the Director of Licensing for Re:Sound Music Licensing Company, a non-profit group that will collect the new fee.
