Alberta Auto Insurance Rate Hikes

Original Air Date: Thursday, June 14, 2012

Alberta drivers are about to see a major jump in their mandatory auto insurance rates, according to the board that oversees them.

Insurance companies argue their costs are up and a rate increase of 12 to 13 percent is needed, while others suggest auto accidents are actually down overall, and rates do not need to rise.

So why a rate hike? Does Alberta’s strong economy play into the proposed increase? When will we know how much our car insurance is going up?

We speak with Merle Taylor, Consumer Representative for the Alberta Automobile Insurance Rate Board.
