Reducing the Risk of Oil Spills

Original Air Date: Wednesday, June 20, 2012

For the third time in a month, pipeline oil spills in Alberta are attracting national attention.  The latest involves a 1400 barrel leak of heavy crude in the Elk Point area northwest of Lloydminster.

The pipeline is operated by Enbridge and connects the oil sands region with the Hardisty Crude Oil Hub.  Clean-up efforts also continue on a spill near the Northwest Territories border as well as the recent pipeline rupture beneath the Red Deer River.

Will the province bow to the demands of environment groups for a public review of pipeline safety? What will it take to reduce the risks?
