Support for the Arts in Alberta

Original Air Date: Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Alberta’s annual Lieutenant Governor's Awards for Emerging Artists have just been handed out. This year, eight of a possible ten new talents received a $10,000 prize.

Alberta artists can apply for grants from all levels of government but critics say they must also learn to treat their craft like a business.

How much does Alberta support the arts? How do we compare to other places? Should artists have to be entrepreneurs as well?

Joining us for this discussion is Chris Carson, Executive Director of the Visual Arts Alberta Association; Richard Truscott, Director of Provincial Affairs for Alberta and Northwest Territories at the Canadian Federation of Independent Business; and Naomi Brand is a dancer, choreographer and a 2012 Lieutenant Governor's Arts Award winner.
