Hate Speech: Amending the Human Rights Act

Original Air Date: Monday, June 11, 2012

A private member’s bill introduced by Alberta MP Brian Storseth has been given final approval by the House of Commons and is now headed for the senate.

The Bill drops hate speech language from the Canadian Human Rights Code. Storseth says it violates Canadians’ charter right to free speech, but critics worry that if it’s left only under the criminal code.

Will the changes protect freedom of speech and fight hatred?

Joining us from Ottawa, Brian Storseth, MP for Westlock - St.Paul; and Linda McKay-Panos, from the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre in Calgary
