A No-Zero Policy: Failing to Fail or Protecting Student Self-Esteem?

Original Air Date: Thursday, June 14, 2012

The suspension of a high school physics teacher who disobeyed policy by giving zero grades for incomplete assignments has many Albertans debating the best way of measuring student success.

Some education experts contend student assessment should be less about grades and more about learning. Others fear removing the threat of failure does little to drive motivation and achievement.

Does a no-zero policy promote higher achievement? What is the best way to set students up for success beyond the classroom?

Joining us for this discussion is Lynden Dorval, the teacher suspended for going against the policy of his school by handing out zero grades on incomplete assignments; and Sharon Friesen, Professor and vice Dean at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Education.
